Cafe Femenino - Peru

Peru Cafe Femenino comes to you from the Lambayeque region, where it is carefully grown by women coffee farmers who have joined together to create a more sustainable economy for themselves.

In 2003, 464 women from the CECANOR co-op joined to form their own group and Program, under the brand name of Cafe Femenino. Today, in Peru, they are more than 800 members strong.

Right from its inception, Cafe Femenino made it its mandate to seek and promote women leadership, gender equity, better access to education, nutrition and health care, for its women members, their daughters and female elders, as well as for their community at large.

To ensure more independence and stability for its members, Cafe Femenino committed resources to help women coffee farmers obtain the legal land titles for the ancestral land passed down to them, and the land they owned with their husbands, on which they had been farming.

This initiative has been a highly successful endeavour, especially in Peru, and a significant step in achieving gender equity, financial independence and security.

This coffee is grown at an altitude varying between 1000-2050 meters above sea level, spread over the hills of 4 different communities.

The diversity of its cultivars (Typica, Catimor, Bourbon, Gran Colombia and Villa Sarchi) makes for some variance in flavour between different lots of their production, but it also provides some security against the challenges of climate change and adds biodiversity.

The Bourbon variety is responsible for the chocolaty flavour notes and heavier body in this coffee, while the Typica is known for its fruity profile and long finish. The Gran Colombia cultivar contributes to its stronger aroma.

With most cultivars and origins, the coffees grown at higher altitude tend to yield fruitier flavours and brighter notes, which is what brings this coffee alive, makes it sparkle and gives it more dimension in the mouth.

In addition to the above factors and cupping characteristics, many other considerations have an effect on flavour profile.

At Aroma Roasters, because we grow a number of fruits ourselves (apple, quince, plum, fig, cherry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, currant) we understand the dynamics of peak flavour when harvest is in full swing. The fruits are more plump, full-flavoured, representative of their inherent taste characteristics, when the plants are at the peak of their production (as opposed to the early or very last part of the harvest).

Therefore, we keep that in mind when selecting coffees. Every year, we work closely with OPTCO (the sole importer and developer of Cafe Femenino coffees) to sample and select our favorite lots from Peru Cafe Femenino. This is a privilege we have earned through long term commitment and relationship, with both Peru Cafe Femenino and OPTCO.

The quality and consistency of Peru Cafe Femenino’s offerings have been tremendous, reliable and always rewarding for our customers over the years.

This coffee is truly at the core of our identity, as roasters.

We hope that knowing a little bit more about it will grow your love for it or entice you to discover its taste for the first time.
